Bulgarian customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint seized 1.32 million contraband cigarettes in 66,000 packs from a truck entering from Turkiye, Svilengrad Customs said on Tuesday.

The cigarettes were uncovered during a routine vehicle inspection. The truck driver is a Turkish national. The cargo originating from Turkiye was bound for France.

The haul is priced at BGN 435,600. Pre-trial proceedings have been launched, Svilengrad Customs added.

Customs Agency data show that nearly 30 million smuggled cigarettes were seized at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint in 2023.
