Attending the exhibition "75 years of NATO and 20 years of Bulgaria in NATO" at the national press club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) in Sofia on Friday, lawyer Prof. Ognyan Gerdzhikov, a former Parliament chairperson (2001-2005), congratulated BTA Director General Kiril Valchev for the initiative as Bulgaria's entry in NATO is one of the significant events in this country’s history over the past 100 years, he underscored. On March 18, 2004, Gerdzhikov handed over to Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012) the ratification of the North Atlantic Treaty.
"We have to give credit to the National Movement Simeon II (now National Movement for Stability and Progress) and especially to Solomon Passy, who was an ardent admirer and defender of the idea of Bulgaria becoming an equal NATO member [...] We achieved this with almost unanimity during our mandate, the 39th National Assembly," he added.
Gerdzhikov also drew attention to the fact that today there is a political force that appeals for Bulgaria to leave NATO. "I think that we should not give in to such suggestions, because NATO provides security and stability to the countries not only in Europe, but across the world, as well," he stressed.
He wished Kiril Valchev and BTA to continue covering such important historical events.
The exhibition, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and 20 years of Bulgaria's accession to NATO, reveals in footage and documents key historical moments preserved in the BTA archive. It will be shown in digital version in the BTA press clubs in the country and abroad.
