The Land Forces carried on their shoulders the weight of the wars of national unification and independence and the two world wars, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Bulgarian Armed Forces Rumen Radev said in his speech for Land Forces Day. The day was marked in front of the Mother Bulgaria Pantheon of the Fallen in the Serbo-Bulgarian War near the village of Gurgulyat, Slivnitsa Municipality.
"The genius of our commanders remains forever inscribed in the annals of military art, and the Bulgarian soldier has become a symbol of unparalleled bravery and selflessness," the head of State said.
Radev said that "while a lot has changed over time - generations, weaponry, the structure of the army - one key thing has remained constant: the Land Forces continue to serve as the backbone of the Bulgarian army and the primary guarantor of security and sovereignty".
In the President's words, the Land Forces are currently facing major challenges, including high levels of undermanning, attrition of personnel, and growing demands in terms of both the volume and complexity of the tasks that need to be tackled.
The head of State expressed his support for the ambitious vision of the Land Forces’ leadership regarding their development and the acceleration of long-overdue modernization. Radev noted this is a process of profound transformation requiring daily efforts by personnel and a comprehensive set of new capabilities. It also involves creating a unified information space and enhancing interoperability, the President added.
This year, Land Forces Day marks 136 years since the Battle of Slivnitsa in the Serbo-Bulgarian War and 146 years since the Bulgarian Land Forces' establishment.
