The foreign trade balance of Bulgaria (export FOB - import CIF) with the EU in the period January - August 2024 was negative and added up to 105.7 million BGN, while in the same period of 2023 the balance was negative again, but at BGN 964.2 million, according data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

In the period January-August 2024, exports of goods from Bulgaria to the EU decreased by 3.4% compared to the same period in 2023 and were worth BGN 36.269 billion, according to preliminary data of the NSI released on Monday.

Bulgaria's main trading partners are Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece and France, which account for 62.3% of exports to EU member states. In the same period of 2023, exports of goods from Bulgaria to the EU decreased by 6.6% compared to the same period of 2022 and amounted to BGN 37.525 billion. Bulgaria's main trading partners were the same countries as in that year, which accounted for 61.4% of exports to EU countries.

In August 2024, exports of goods from Bulgaria to the EU decreased by 2.4% compared to August 2023 and amounted to BGN 4.286 billion, while in the same month of 2023 exports to the EU decreased by 11.1% compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to BGN 4.370 billion.

Imports of goods to Bulgaria from the EU in the period January - August 2024 decreased by 5.6% compared to the same period in 2023 and amounted to BGN 36.374 billion (at CIF prices). The highest value volume of goods imported from Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece and the Netherlands. According to the NSI, imports of goods into Bulgaria from the EU in the period January-August 2023 decreased by 0.6% compared to the same period in 2022 and were worth BGN 38.489 billion, while the largest value volume was of goods imported from Germany, Italy, Romania, Greece and the Netherlands.

In August 2024, the import of goods into Bulgaria from the EU decreased by 10.6% and was worth BGN 4.011 billion, while in August 2023, the decrease was by 5.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and imports amounted to BGN 4.480 billion.
