Bulgarian Red Cross Distributes Donations in Hitrino in Wake of Deadly Railway Accident

Sofia, February 2 (BTA) - A public board that manages donations for the northeastern village of Hitrino after a deadline train crash in December 2016, has distributed various sums among the village residents depending on the severity of damage they suffered, said the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) Thursday. A total of 2,076,495 leva in donations have been raised to date.

On the early morning of December 10, 2016, a freight train carrying flammable LPG and polypropylene in 24 tank cars from Bourgas to Rousse was derailed as it entered Hitrino. Onе of the derailed tank cars was ruptured and leaked a cloud of prolypropylene which exploded and set fire to buildings within a large perimeter. Seven people died and 29 were injured. 26 houses were completely destroyed and many more were badly damaged.

The inhabitants of 30 completely destroyed and badly damaged houses will receive 2,900 leva for household appliances and 12,000 leva for furniture. Seventy households with houses in need of repair will receive 1,750 leva for appliances and 8,000 leva each for furniture. The inhabitants of 200 houses which sustained only minor damage will receive 1,250 leva for appliances and 1,000 leva for furniture.

Another 20,000 leva will go for garage doors, 190,000 leva for house doors and 15,000 leva for windows.

The financial support will be remitted in stages depending on the readiness of the households to use the money and on the availability of cash in the bank account of the donations campaign.
