Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov sent a congratulatory address to the employees of the  Hail Suppression Executive Agency on the occasion of World Meteorological Day, March 23, said the line ministry on its website.

“In the context of increasing climate change and the associated risks to agricultural production, your work is gaining increasing importance. The protection of agricultural production and the sustainable development of the sector are a mission that more and more people and institutions are supporting,” Minister Tahov said.

He noted that thanks to the professionalism and dedication of the employees of the  Hail Suppression Executive Agency, thousands of farmers rely on reliable hail protection. The agency is fully prepared for the upcoming active season. The necessary quantities of anti-hail rockets have been provided, and the start of the season will be determined according to weather conditions and crop development, noted Minister Tahov.

The Minister also pointed out that work is underway to expand the territorial scope of the anti-hail system through a project to build a new testing ground and 25 missile sites, as well as to introduce an entirely new anti-hail zone in Northern Bulgaria. A pilot implementation of ground-based generators with silver iodide is also underway in two zones where the use of rockets or aircraft is not permitted.

For the first time, we are also launching a risk management intervention with funds from the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas with a total budget of EUR 60 million, noted Tahov, adding that the goal is to provide financial protection for farmers by supporting insurance premiums and creating a Mutual Fund.
