The number of new cars registered in European countries in January and February fell to 1,685,640 vehicles, down 3% year-on-year. That's according to the latest figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), published Tuesday on its website.

Among the EU's leading car markets, the most significant Y/Y decline in new car registrations, down 6%, was recorded in Italy in January and February.

Germany and France registered 4.6% and 3.3% fewer new cars, respectively, compared to January-February 2024.

However, Spain recorded an increase in the number of new cars registered. Year-to-date, it is up 8.4% compared to the same period in 2024.

Among EU countries, Estonia recorded the most significant decline in new car registrations in the first two months of 2025, with a year-on-year drop of 61.7%. 

At the other end of the scale is Lithuania with a 29.5% increase.

Bulgaria has seen a decline in the number of new car registrations since the beginning of the year. They are down 2.5% Y/Y, compared to the same period in 2024, the organization's data shows. 

In January and February, 7,389 new cars were registered in Bulgaria, compared to 7,581 in the same period of 2024.

The share of new cars with petrol engines is the highest compared to all new cars registered in Bulgaria during the reporting period – 6,108. This is followed by new cars with diesel engines - 739, battery electric vehicles (BEV) - 279. The share of newly registered hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is lower - 190 cars, as well as plug-in hybrid cars - 73.
