Traffic through the Danube Bridge at Ruse will be suspended on Thursday in connection with the ongoing repairs, the Road Infrastructure Agency said on Tuesday. The Agency said that the passage of passenger cars will be restricted from 9 am to 9 pm and of heavy vehicles for up to 24 hours - from 9 am on March 27 to 9 am on March 28.
The Bulgarian section of the Danube Bridge, which is part of the I-2 road, has a total length of 1,057 km. Since its commissioning 70 years ago, in 1954, no major repairs have been carried out. More than 22 years ago the joints were strengthened and in 2011 the waterproofing and asphalt pavement were replaced.
During the traffic suspension drivers of heavy goods vehicles will be able to use parking lots and rest areas in the districts of Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Yambol and Haskovo. A map with the waiting areas, as well as a map with alternative traffic routes are available.
During the traffic stoppage on the Danube Bridge at Ruse from 9 am on 27 March until 9 pm on 28 March, route passes with this section cannot be used by vehicles over 3.5 t. The National Toll Authority advises all hauliers to plan their routes in advance and use alternative traffic options.
