In the fourth quarter of 2024, 1.1 million Bulgarian residents made tourist trips, the National Statistical Institute said on Monday. The majority of them - 74.4% travelled only in the country, 20.5% - only abroad, and 5.1% - both in the country and abroad. Compared with the same quarter of 2023, the number of travellers aged 15 and over decreased by 7.2%.
Most Bulgarian travellers were aged 25 - 44 years – 445,800, or 41.2% of all travellers. The share of trips in the country dominated in all age groups, the highest (78.2%) being the share among persons aged 25 - 44 years. The share of residents aged 45 - 64 who travelled abroad (24.9% of the total travellers in this group) was the highest compared with other age groups.
The majority of tourist trips in the country (47%) and abroad (76.5%) were for holiday and recreation’ purpose.
Registered as independent were 1.3 million, or 86.6% of the total number of private tourist trips. The relative share of independent trips without booking was 93.4% in the country and 59.2% abroad.
In the expenditure structure by type, with the highest relative share on domestic and outbound trips, was the expenditure on food - 35% and 30.1%.
The average expenditure on private trips per person was 278.38 BGN in the country and 714.00 BGN abroad.
At the same time, the average expenditure per person on a professional trip was 252.91 BGN in the country and 1 214.82 BGN abroad.
The National Statistical Institute data in the third quarter of the year 1.8 million Bulgarian citizens made tourist trips. The overwhelming majority - 72.3% - travelled only within the country, 20.8% - only abroad, and 69% traveled both within the country and abroad. Compared with the same quarter in 2023, the number of travellers aged 15 and over remained the same.
