Bulgarian Deputy Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva held a working meeting with Mexican Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodriguez Zamora within the international tourism exhibition FITUR 2025 in Madrid, Georgieva's Ministry said in a press release on Friday. The sides discussed promotion of bilateral cooperation to meet the growing interest of Mexican tourists in Bulgaria.

Georgieva said that in January-November 2024, the number of Mexican tourists' visits to Bulgaria grew by 92% from the like period of 2023, reaching 8,147. According to her, the charter flights between Sofia and Mexico City, which were launched in May 2024, have contributed significantly to these positive results. Data show that Mexican tourists' preferred destinations are Sofia Municipality, Veliko Tarnovo (North Central Bulgaria), and Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria) mostly for cultural and urban tourism

The Mexican Secretary of Tourism said that work is actively being done to solve the cases related to Bulgarian tourists being refused entry in Mexico. The Bulgarian side will be informed about the specific measures taken by Mexico.

The meeting was an opportunity to present Mexico's nomination of Gloria Guevara Manzo for Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization from 2026 to 2029. She presented her priorities related to promoting sustainability, public-private partnerships, and competitiveness of the tourist sector in Europe and Southeast Europe.

Also at FITUR 2025, Georgieva discussed with representatives of Jet2.com & Jet2Holidays the preparations for this year's summer season. The company reported an increase of 68% of the Bulgarian market in the last two years and forecast an additional increase of 25% in 2025. With the launch of direct flights from Edinburgh, UK, to Burgas (on the Black Sea) and the expected increase in British tourists in the May-October period, Jet2.com & Jet2Holidays are already working on packages for summer 2026. The sides also discussed joint marketing campaigns on the British market this year.
