Taraclia District is marking the 26th anniversary of a historic referendum in favour of retaining its status as an independent administrative territorial unit. The decision to hold the referendum came after the 1998 administrative territorial reform, when Taraclia was incorporated into the neighbouring Cahul uyezd, the Taraclia District council said in a press release on Friday.

"With 92% of residents, who are mostly ethnic Bulgarians, voting in favour, the referendum became a symbol of the unity and determination of the local community to protect not just its territorial integrity but also its identity, cultural values, and traditions. Thanks to this historic decision, the district has been able to develop its Bulgarian language and culture while reinforcing its autonomy," the press release read.

Taraclia district council officials added that the referendum has also become a symbol of the resilience of the Bulgarian spirit, as the local people showed courage and commitment to safeguarding their territory. A number of local activists and public figures were involved in organizing the referendum, advocating for the preservation of the rights and cultural heritage of the area.

Located in South Moldova, Taraclia District comprises 26 settlements, including the city of Taraclia and the town of Tvardita. According to the 2014 census, the district has a population of about 40,000 people, 66% of whom identify as ethnic Bulgarians. The district borders the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, Cahul District, and Ukraine’s Odesa region.
