Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh and Interior Minister Daniel Mitov agreed on Wednesday to begin enhanced fire safety inspections of tourist sites across the country due to the busy winter season, the Tourism Ministry said. The inspections will also cover compliance with other requirements related to the safety of tourist sites.

A tragic incident in a hotel in Turkiye that left at least 76 dead became the occasion for the working meeting of the two ministers, aimed at assisting businesses in ensuring the security and peace of mind of tourists

"The safety of tourists, people working in the tourism sector, and all Bulgarian and foreign guests in our resorts is of paramount importance. That is why we initiated an extraordinary meeting with Minister Mitov, at which we discussed the possibilities of increasing the number of extraordinary inspections," Borshosh said.
The meeting was attended by the head of the Interior Ministry's General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov and the Director of the Control and Inspection Activity Directorate at the Ministry of Tourism, Ivan Videlov.

According to data from the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, during the winter tourist season, the directorate's teams annually carry out between 400 and 500 planned inspections. By the end of last year, the number of inspections was 181, and the issued recommendations were 64, and the identified irregularities were eliminated in a timely manner.

Earlier in the day, Borshosh offered his condolences to the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkiye Mehmet Ersoy on the occasion of the fire that broke out in a hotel in the Turkish ski resort of Kartalkaya, where 76 people died and over 50 were injured.
