site.bta Central Government Debt at BGN 41,790 at End-May - Finance Ministry

The central government debt of Bulgaria as of end-May 2024 amounts to BGN 41,790.4 million, which is an increase by BGN 424.0 million from end-April 2024, the Finance Ministry said Friday. The debt increase is mainly due to new debt assumed in May on the domestic government securities market. Domestic debt amounts to BGN 11,350.3 million and external debt to BGN 30,440.1 million.

The central government debt-to-GDP ratio is 20.9%, which is an increase by 0.2 percentage points as compared to the level of the previous month. The share of domestic debt to GDP is 5.7% and of external debt 15.2%. As regards the subsector’s debt structure, the share of domestic and external debt for May 2024 is 27.2% and 72.8%, respectively. 

As regards the debt structure by instruments, the main share continues to be formed by bonds issued on international capital markets – 59.3%, followed by government securities issued on the domestic market – 26.6%, and by loans – 14.2%. As regards the interest structure of debt, the trend for predominance of fixed interest rate debt (99.1%) is preserved; as regards the currency structure of debt, EUR- and BGN-denominated debt instruments continue to have a large relative share (99.9%). As regards the maturity structure of debt by original maturity, the debt instruments with maturity of over 10 years have the largest share – 55.9%, followed by those with maturity from 5 to 10 years – 33.2%, from 1 year to 5 years – 10.7% and up to 1 year – 0.3%. As regards the structure by residual maturity, the share of debt up to 1 year accounts for 14.6%, that from 1 year to 5 years accounts for 24.2%, the debt from 5 to 10 years accounts for 33.1% and that over 10 years accounts for 28.2%.

As of 31 May 2024, central government guaranteed debt amounts to BGN 820.1 million.

The central government guaranteed debt/GDP ratio is 0.4%. 

Government guaranteed debt amounts to BGN 1,699.0 million in May 2024, domestic guarantees amount to BGN 187.9 million, with the government guaranteed debt-to-GDP ratio being 0.9%.
