The President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Prof. Robert Schlogl, received the Doctor Honoris Causa title from Sofia University on Friday. The distinction was presented to him by Sofia University Vice-Rector Prof. Tony Spasov at a solemn ceremony on Friday.
Spasov announced the awarding of the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Sofia University to Schlogl in Latin and Old Bulgarian languages. Robert Schlоgl received the honorary title for his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of heterogeneous analysis and chemical energy conversion, for the Foundation's contribution to the development of scientists in Bulgaria, as well as for the cooperation of Sofia University with scientific institutions in Germany.
The proposal for the honorary title of the oldest university in Bulgaria is the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Its Dean Prof. Dr. Anela Ivanova presented the biography and scientific achievements of prof. Robert Schlоgl.
Schlogl's scientific research focuses on the study of heterogeneous catalysts to combine fundamental scientific knowledge with technical applicability, as well as on the development of energy storage materials optimized at the nanoscale level. He is currently working on future energy systems and the complex challenges of the energy transition in search of solutions for efficient chemical energy conversion.
"I am convinced that Prof. Schlogl will be a worthy recipient of the honorary degree because of his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of heterogeneous catalysis and the development of concepts applicable to energy storage materials and as President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has supported for decades the development of scientists in Bulgaria and at Sofia University, as well as scientific cooperation between the University and research institutions in Germany," said Prof. Anela Ivanova. She noted that the award is also an expression of the Foundation's contribution to the development of modern science in Bulgaria through the support of over 400 scholarship recipients - Bulgarian scientists, most of whom are from Sofia University.
Prof. Robert Schlogl delivered an academic address on the topic Solid Catalyst: How They Work.
