Bulgaria's 12th-grader Alexandra Petkova presented a research project of her own in the field of physics at a Nobel Prize event in Stockholm, the Education and Science Ministry in Sofia reported on Friday. Alexandra, who attends the National School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in the Bulgarian capital, gave a seven-minute presentation to an audience of more than 1,000 people. She was one of 20 young people from across the world whose research projects were selected for presentation at the international event.
Alexandra was invited to the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS) after winning the top award at the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in September 2024. Her achievements in physics helped Bulgaria make one of its most successful performances in the history of the EUCYS, whose 2024 edition was held in Katowice, Poland. Back then, she presented to an international commission her experimental and theoretical research on the angles of waves left by moving vessels. Alexandra's formula could be used to reduce the fuel consumption of ships.
The young Bulgarian scientist was among the official guests at the Nobel Prize ceremony, which was attended by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and his family. She met with the Nobel laureates at a gala dinner in the Golden Hall of Stockholm City Hall.
The SIYSS is an annual event organized by the SIYSS Committee of the Swedish Federation of Young Scientists and takes place during the Nobel Week. It aims to inspire youth to pursue science, by highlighting remarkable achievements of young scientists from around the world.
