The cabinet Thursday approved a draft agreement between the governments of Bulgaria and the US on cooperation on a project for the construction of new nuclear capacity at the Kozloduy NPP site and on Bulgaria's civil nuclear programme.

A National Assembly Resolution of January 2023 assigned the Council of Ministers to hold negotiations and sign an intergovernmental agreement with the US on building new nuclear capacity at the Kozloduy NPP using AP1000 technology.

The draft agreement is subject to ratification by the National Assembly.

The document aims to create a framework for deepening cooperation on the project for the construction of new nuclear capacity at the Kozloduy NPP site and on Bulgaria's civil nuclear programme based on the principle of mutual benefit and taking into account the common interests and objectives of the two countries.

The main activities under the agreement include consultations, the exchange of expert and technical input to progress in the development of Bulgaria's nuclear program, the participation of third country entities, in compliance with the applicable national legislation, in the design, construction and commissioning of new nuclear capacity at the Kozloduy NPP, the identification of potential funding, and the promotion of civil nuclear energy within the EU.
