The two candidates who reached the runoff in the Croatian presidential elections voted Sunday in Zagreb. Incumbent president Zoran Milanovic, supported by the largest opposition party - the Social Democratic Party of Croatia, and the candidate of the ruling centre-right Croatian Democratic Union, Dragan Primorac, exercised their right to vote, both indicating that they were not worried or stressed about the election race.
Both candidates voiced hope for high voter turnout, with Primorac emphasizing that everything depends on the Croatian voters on Sunday.
Milanovic, on his part, took the opportunity to make a broader comment on the political situation in the country, addressing issues such as the war in Ukraine and the role of the European Union. According to him, the format of the debates between candidates in presidential elections in Croatia needs to be changed, as currently they are not well organized or useful.
Nearly 3.8 million Croatian citizens have the opportunity to vote in over 6,700 polling stations across Croatia, as well as in polling stations in 38 other countries around the world.
It is expected that the State Election Commission will start publishing the first unofficial results at 7:30 p.m. local time – half an hour after the end of the election day.
Milanovic was close to securing a second term already in the first round, receiving 49.9 percent of the votes. The second-place finisher, Primorac, received 19.35 percent in the first round.
