Representatives of the Bulgarian community in the Republic of North Macedonia, along with several individuals who arrived from Bulgaria for the ceremony, paid tribute to Macedonian Bulgarian revolutionary Mara Buneva in Skopje.
The attendees laid flowers at the memorial plaque of Buneva at the quay of the Vardar River. As per tradition, a memorial service was held at the St. Demetrius church near the Stone Bridge in the centre of Skopje, where on January 13, 1928, Buneva, who was a member of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, assassinated the former Serbian Chetnik commander and Yugoslav legal official of the Skopje Oblast Velimir Prelic, after which she committed suicide. Prelic was held responsible for the torture of young revolutionaries.
Today Buneva is considered a heroine in Bulgaria.
