Bulgaria's gross external debt totalled EUR 43,948 million (46% of the projected GDP) at the end of September 2023, the Bulgarian National Bank said. This is EUR 132.1 million (0.3%) less than a year earlier.

Short-term liabilities totalled slightly over EUR 8,000 million (18.4% of the gross debt, 8.4% of GDP), down by EUR 498.4 million (5.8%) on September 2022.

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 35,880 million (81.6% of the gross debt, 37.5% of GDP), up by EUR 366.3 million (1%) on a year earlier.

The General Government gross external debt topped EUR 9,085 million (9.5% of GDP) at the end of September 2023. It increased by EUR 679 million (8.1%) from a year earlier.

The central bank's external liabilities were nearly EUR 2,100 million (2.2% of GDP). They decreased by EUR 13.1 million (0.6%) on an annual basis.

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions were nearly EUR 6,763 million (7.1% of GDP). They increased by EUR 622.8 million (10.1%) from a year earlier.

The external liabilities of other sectors were nearly EUR 11,700 million (12.2% of GDP). They decreased by over EUR 1,281 million (9.9%) from a year earlier.

Intercompany lending totalled EUR 14,300 million (15% of GDP) at the end of September 2023, EUR 139.4 million (1%) less than a year earlier. At 32.6%, it held the largest share in the external debt in September 2023, compared with 32.8% a year earlier.
