The market price index (MPI), which reflects the movement of wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, fell by 0.23% to 2.200 in the last week of September. 

The level of the MPI at the beginning of 2023 was 2.316 points, and in the first third of March it reached its spring high of 2.480 points. The MPI's baseline level of 1,000 points was set in 2005. Food prices are typically lowest in the summer - and that's because of the seasonal cheapening of fruits and vegetables.

The prices of imported apples rose by 0.5% to BGN 2.09 per kilo. The price of bananas rose by 2.2% and they were trading at BGN 2.81 per kilo. Watermelons prices rose by 9.2% to BGN 0.95 per kilo and melons' prices by 11% to BGN 1.72 per kilo.

Of the fruits, only lemons and grapes decreased in price - by 3% to BGN 2.87 per kilo, and by 8.8% to BGN 2.19 per kilo respectively.

Potatoes prices retreated by 0.7% to BGN 1.34 per kilo. The price of cabbage rose by 2.7% to BGN 1.14 per kilo, as well as tomatoes (greenhouse) - by 13.3% to BGN 3.40 per kilo. Greenhouse cucumbers fell by 2.4% to BGN 2.83 per kilogram. Green peppers rose by 0.6% to BGN 1.77 per kg, while red peppers fell by 0.5% to BGN 2.08 per kg. The price of carrots remained unchanged at BGN 1.20 per kilo, while the price of mature onions (imported) fell by 1.4% to BGN 1.43 per kilo.

Cow's cheese rose by 1.5% to BGN 11.36 per kilo. Vitosha cheese fell by 0.7% to BGN 17.25 per kilo.

Yoghurt (3 and above 3% fat content) rose by 2.7% and a 400 g bucket is bought for BGN 1.14. The price of fresh milk (3% fat) also increased by 0.5% and it is sold at BGN 2.14 per litre.

Chicken meat rose by 2.6% and is offered at BGN 6.67 per kilo, eggs (size M) remain unchanged and are bought at BGN 0.32 per piece wholesale.

The price of rice rose by 2.5%, and it is traded at BGN 3.25 per kilo. Lentils also rose by 0.7% to BGN 4.13 per kilo, as did mature beans by 0.3% to BGN 3.95 per kilo.

Sugar prices remain unchanged , as it is sold at BGN 2.43 per kilo. Type 500 flour rose by 4.8% to BGN 1.53 per kilo. The price of rose oil by 1% and it is traded at BGN 3.02 per litre in a plastic bottle. Cow's butter (125 gram packet) is down 1.9% to BGN 2.53 per unit.
