Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 43,064.1 million (45.1% of GDP) at end-July 2023, growing by EUR 965.3 million (2.3%) from end-July 2022, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) reported on Friday.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 7,199.9 million at end-July 2023 (16.7% of gross external debt, 7.5% of GDP), dropping by EUR 1,294 million (15.2%) from end-July 2022.

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 35,864.2 million (83.3% of gross external debt, 37.5% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,259.3 million (6.7%) from end-July 2022.

The government's gross external debt totalled EUR 9,444.9 million (9.9% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,252.1 million (31.3%) from end-July 2022.

The external liabilities of BNB, the central bank, stood at EUR 2,037.9 million (2.1% of GDP), dropping by EUR 155.9 million (7.1%) from end-July 2022.

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions totalled EUR 5,636.9 million (5.9% of GDP), decreasing by EUR 122.3 million (2.1%) from end-July 2022.

Other sectors' external debt equalled EUR 11,923.3 million (12.5% of GDP), dropping by EUR 1,219.3 million (9.3%) from end-July 2022.

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,021.1 million (14.7% of GDP) at end-July 2023, growing by EUR 210.6 million (1.5%) from end-July 2022. It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 32.6% at end-July 2023, compared with 32.8% at end-July 2022.
