In August 2023, Bulgaria reported the biggest increase (38.7%) in new car registrations (3,421) in the European Union compared with August 2022, according to data of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (EAMA) made public on Wednesday.

Overall, the European Union new car market grew for the 13th month running in August 2023, despite August typically being a slower month for car sales. Double-digit gains indicate that the EU market is rebounding from last year’s component shortages, EAMA said.

In August 2023, battery-electric cars accounted for 4.4% of new car registrations in Bulgaria. The majority of them, 72.9% were petrol-powered, followed by diesel-powered cars, 18.9%. Hybrid-electric cars represented 2.3% of all new car registrations in this country.

In most EU countries, sales of new electric cars increased in August 2023, with a market share averaging 21%, up from 11.6% in August 2022.
