Bulgarian book publisher and film festival director Jacqueline Wagenstein was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalière de l'ordre des arts et des lettres) at the French Embassy on Thursday. Receiving the honour from Ambassador Joel Meyer, she said: "I believe France is the country with the most meaningful cultural policy and we have much to learn from it."
Wagenstein is founder of the CineLibri International Book to Film Festival. The distinction is awarded by the French Ministry of Culture to artists for outstanding achievements in art or literature and for their influence in France and around the world.
"Despite being born with a French name and French blood, learning French from the age of three, living in France for decades, and dedicating my life to working with and for French culture, I have never expected to be even slightly worthy of the Order that my grandfather, my mother and many talented and deserving people have received. I am immensely grateful and deeply moved by this honor, which I consider an extraordinary responsibility.
"To me, French culture is the cradle of modern cultures and one of the few pillars of democracy, normality, and humanity - something that, unfortunately, is no longer taken for granted. This very culture has given me my love for art and has shaped much of the path I walk today," said Wagenstein.
