Bulgaria's highest ranked tennis player Grigor Dimitrov kicked off his 2025 clay court season with a 6-3 6-4 win over Chilean Nikolas Jarry (world. No. 58) at the Monte-Carlo Masters tournament on Tuesday. He will meet Polish player Valentin Vacherot (No. 255) who entered the main draw with a wild card.
Dimitrov's only previous meeting with Vacherot came in the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters with the Bulgarian winning 7-5 6-2. He reached the quarterfinal last year.
The match started with a break of Dimitrov's serve but the world No. 18 managed to quickly break back and won eight out of the ten next games to reach a 6-3 3-0 lead.
The rest of the match was filled with ups and downs.
Jarry had two chances to equalize the score in the second set at 3-2 15-40 but the Bulgarian battled through the break points. Dimitrov had a match point at 5-3 and then a 40-15 lead at 5-4. However, he had to save three more break points and to wait to his seventh match point to secure the win after a game which lasted more than ten minutes.
