Dryanovo was founded in 1470, but near the present-day town there was a settlement from the 11th-12th centuries. It is located at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, 22 km east from Gabrovo and 24 km from Veliko Tarnovo. The Dryanovska River flows through it. The town is the birthplace of Bulgarian National Revival architect and builder Kolyo Ficheto (1800-1881), who built three houses in the town: Hadzhigencheva, Hadzhistaneva and Ikonomova, of which only the Ikonomova house, built in 1859 for the family of the priest Vasil Ikonomov, has been preserved to this day.
