Trends in recent years show that the need for IT specialists on the labor market is no longer as great as for mechanical and electrical engineers, Varna Technical University Rector Prof. Dragomir Plamenov told BTA on Tuesday.
The issue of the lack of enough marine engineers remains a problem, he stressed, adding that in some of the marine specialties at the university, the number of foreign students is greater than Bulgarian students. "We are doing everything possible to attract young people, as the diplomas are recognized worldwide, and the industry has a huge need for personnel," Plamenov emphasized. He also said that the university offers programmes in which students are financially relieved.
The Rector noted that the University's management is discussing the introduction of new master's programmes after the Technological and Insurance Expertise in Transport programme was launched in 2024 and enjoyed great interest. The programme is implemented jointly by the university and the Svishtov Academy of Economics and will be continued in 2025.
The university is also in talks with the Higher Technical School in Deggendorf, Germany, for joint training of students and double diplomas, Plamenov noted. He specified that an idea for the creation of another master's programme related to industrial security is also being discussed with the university's long-time partner, Siemens.
Plamenov attended the official opening of the Technological World career fair at the university in the seaside city. The two-day forum will bring students together with representatives of more than 50 companies from different sectors of the economy and industry who offer internships and jobs.
