site.btaRegional Environment, Water Inspectorate Fines Company for Pollution in Plovdiv

The Plovdiv Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate (REWI) fined a metalworking enterprise in the Southern Industrial Zone BGN 10,000 after a number of violations were found during an inspection, said Miloslava Mihaylova from the REWI.

The extraordinary inspection was carried out following a report filed by a worker in a neighbouring building about daily leakage of wastewater in the morning hours, characterized by a strong and pungent odor.

The inspected company has been operating since 2022 and works with lathes and milling machines, for the cooling of which it uses a liquid that must be replaced by a specialized company and subsequently transferred as waste. 

The eco-experts established that the used liquid, together with the metal shavings falling from the machines, are collected in a container, from which the liquid flows without hindrance into the city sewer system of Plovdiv.

During the inspection, an additional thorough inspection of the entire activity of the enterprise was made, during which it was found that requirements for guaranteeing clean atmospheric air in the environment were not met.

The company was sanctioned with a fine of BGN 10,000 and given fixed deadlines for the removal of irregularities and implementation of better practices. The company must also clean up the spill from the container and prevent the re-leakage of contaminated water into the city's sewer system.

In addition, the company is obliged to submit monitoring data for the measured and registered emissions of all regulated harmful substances emitted from the site.

The REWI emphasised that the implementation of the given regulations will also be strictly monitored.
