Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) Chair Maria Filipova has ordered the market withdrawal of Wildkraut Energy Sniff and Sniff Bull Energy Dust products, which are energy drink alternatives and are taken nasally. Those products have been identified as a serious threat to the consumers’ health and safety, CCP said in a press release on Wednesday.
The CCP was alerted by members of the public following an advertisement circulated on social media, and sanctioned online retailers offering Sniff Bull Energy Dust, also requesting the Health Ministry's opinion on the safety of the product.
Notifications will also be sent to SAFETY GATE, the EU rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products.
The product contains ingredients such as caffeine, taurine, guarana and other substances that have been linked to various health risks when taken repeatedly. The Health Ministry has requested detailed information from the manufacturer of Wildkraut Energy Sniff on the product’s quantitative and qualitative composition, and its method of use.
The products have been found to pose risks of nasal mucosa inflammation, airway blockage, among other adverse effects on the body. With systemic (regular) use, inhalation through the nose of Wildkraut Energy and Sniff Bull Energy Dust results in atrophic rhinitis, which in turn can lead to epistaxis with secondary infection and subsequent perforation of the nasal septum. It could also lead to difficult nasal breathing, deterioration of the quality and physiology of inhaled air, as well as to hypoxia leading to other complications for the whole organism.
