A Bulgarian parliamentary delegation, led by National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov, on Wednesday paid tribute to the soldiers who died for the freedom and independence of Ukraine. They laid flowers at a memorial wall in the capital Kyiv.
The guests are in Ukraine at the invitation of the country's Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) Chair Ruslan Stefanchuk. They include the leader of the National Assembly Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Daniel Mitov, the leader of the Bulgarian Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Stanislav Anastassov, and National Assembly Bulgaria-Ukraine Friendship Group Chair Ivaylo Mirchev.
Almost two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Bulgarian parliamentarians saw first-hand the effects of the rocket strikes which have hit Kyiv. Zhelyazkov commented: "It is hard to imagine that these ruins were once safe and comfortable homes to many Ukrainian families, there were children's playgrounds close by, and life was proceeding at a normal pace. We understand the pain of Ukraine. We will continue to support the country and all its citizens in their drive to build a free, safe, independent and prosperous country."
The visit of the Bulgarian parliamentary delegation started on February 6 with a meeting with Parliament Chair Stefanchuk. Later, Zhelyazkov gave an address to the members of the Ukrainian Parliament, who welcomed their Bulgarian colleagues with applause.
The guests said Bulgaria will continue to support Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic integration and will contribute to the country's restoration after the unjustified Russian aggression.
