The victim of Monday’s accident involving a cargo van that fell into the Danube River in the Romanian county of Mehedinti was a Bulgarian national, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said.
"Due to the heightened media interest surrounding the van accident on a viaduct over the Danube River on Romanian territory, the Foreign Ministry reports that Tuesday the Bulgarian Embassy in Bucharest received official confirmation from the local authorities that the victim of the road accident was a Bulgarian national," the Ministry’s press release read.
The Bulgarian Embassy in Bucharest is in constant contact with the competent Romanian authorities and is ready to assist the victim's family, the Foreign Ministry added.
The passport of a 53-year-old Bulgarian national with initials Y. H. B. was found at the scene of the accident, the head of the Romanian Department for Emergency Situations, Dr. Raed Arafat, told BTA on Monday. Earlier in the day, Agerpres and Digi24 reported that a Bulgarian was driving the van and was alone in the vehicle.
