Bulgaria Listed among Worst
20 SO2 Emitting Countries,
International Analysis Shows

Sofia, August 19 (BTA) - Bulgaria is among the top 20 sulphur dioxide emitting countries in the world, Greenpeace Bulgaria said on Monday.

According to the organization, Bulgaria is the only European Union Member State included in that list. Serbia and Ukraine are the other two European countries among the top pollutants. India is ranked first, followed by Russia and China, the analysis shows.

India is the world's top emitter of SO2, making up more than 15 per cent of global anthropogenic SO2 emissions, having recently overtaken Russia and China. Power plants and industries burning coal and oil are responsible for two-thirds of the anthropogenic sulfur dioxide emission hotspots tracked by NASA satellites, according to a Greenpeace India analysis.

The main sources of SO2 in Bulgaria are the Maritsa thermoelectric power plants and particularly the largest, Maritsa Iztok 2 and the oldest, TPP Brikel, as well as TPP Bobov Dol, the NGO said. RY/BR
