Three Bulgarian students will present their scientific work at one of the most prestigious competitions for young scientists - the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2025, which will take place in May in Columbus, Ohio, the Ministry of Education and Science said Thursday.

The students will have the opportunity to take part in the global expo after winning the top three awards at 2025's Science and Innovation Fair. Bulgaria will be represented by twelfth-grader Alexandra Nikolova from the Natural and Mathematical High School (NMHS) in Burgas, who participated with the project Inhibition of α-amylase as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

The other two major awards are for graduates of the Mathematics High School in Plovdiv. Demira Nedeva from the 12th grade will present her project Fixed systems of Shapley-Shubik and Banzhaf indices with one or two presidents, and Dimana Pramatarova from the 11th grade will show her research on the topic Incomplete with squares factorials of polynomials. Alexandra Petkova, who won first prize at the European Competition for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in September, will also participate in the World Expo. The graduate of the National School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will represent the countries of the European Union.

During the fair a prize was also awarded to a student team of the "Dr. Petar Beron" High School in Varna, who showed their joint project Surface photometry of galaxies. The students will have the opportunity to present their work at the International Science Expo in Luxembourg. During the 2025 Science and Innovation Fair a total of 15 student projects were presented. The scientific projects were in different fields - mathematics, natural, social, historical and medical sciences, information and communication technologies. The scientific jury determined awards for the efforts and achievements of all participants.

The competition is organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Ministry of Education. It is part of the initiatives carried out within the National Programme "Education with Science". It aims to identify young scientific talents among young people and to support their future development. It also provides an opportunity to present their findings internationally, which could help solve current societal challenges. The initiative is implemented in partnership with the Young Talents Club.
