An innovative museum opened on Thursday in the military cemetery in Shumentsi village near Tutrakan, said Museum Director Petar Boychev. Among the official guests of the event were former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012), MEP Emil Radev, and head of the Vasil Levski National Military University, General Ivan Malamov, as well as senior military officers.

The newly built museum will be home to the Tutrakan Epic 1916 memorial which employs new technologies to give visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the battle for Dobrudja during the Second Balkan War. The information is presented through an exposition and a 3D map of the events. The core of the museum exposition is an interactive diorama, where visitors will have the opportunity to realistically experience the attack on the Tutrakan Fortress in 1916.

“Thanks to the 360-degree screen, people will feel as in a real combat situation and learn about the heroism shown by the Bulgarian army", said Boychev. "We have set up four kiosks that provide information about the other liberation wars as well, because we want to establish ourselves as a museum of the national unification of Bulgaria," he added.

The project for the new museum building was worth a little over BGN 6.5 million, including costs attributed to delays and inflation. The project was financed through the national Flag fund.

Part of the events accompanying the official opening of the museum is a national scientific conference Thursday and Friday with the participation of 36 researchers and museum experts. A discussion with writer Zahari Karabashliev will also be part of the conference programme, as he will present the events of the Dobrudja front through the lens of his new novel, A Wound.
