The Velichie party, which entered the National Assembly after a recent recount of the votes cast in the October 2024 parliamentary elections, has been barred from sharing in parliamentary committees, party leader Ivelin Mihaylov told a briefing in the legislature on Wednesday. Mihaylov called it “a blockade and a sabotage of the constitutional rights of the Velichie Party,” noting that it has lasted more than a month now.

He argued: “We have no way of improving a law or submitting a motion unless we share in the committees. For more than a month now, we have been unable to participate in committees as all sorts of excuses are made to keep us out.”

Mihaylov said Velichie was belatedly admitted to the National Assembly “not because we are well-connected but because errors were proven in 46% of the voting sections.” If the definitive decision of the Constitutional Court after the recount was fair, and not political, it should have left many more members of the other parties out of the National Assembly, he said.

According to Mihaylov, other parliamentary parties have argued that Velichie’s participation in committees would diminish their own shares in them, which they would not accept. He referred specifically to comments by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning. “These people are the masters of the nation,” Mihaylov observed.

Besides that, he said, the Velichie parliamentary group finds itself unable to take the floor in the debating chamber. He added that lobbyist laws are pushed through in the legislature, and Velichie cannot expose the malpractice unless it acquires positions in committees.
