Tuesday discussions on urgent issues continued until evening at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, reads a press release Wednesday by the head of the Bulgarian delegation to the IPU, Rositsa Kirova. Four urgent items were proposed for consideration, of which one was dropped.

The debates were heated and lengthy and showed the division and polarisation on certain issues in the world, Kirova said.

For example, in 2022, the resolution on the conflict in Ukraine was not adopted, but in fact, the greatest division remains on the issue of Israel-Palestine, she added. The first resolution was proposed by Chile and Peru: 'Advancing global economic cooperation: Reducing tariffs and fighting protectionism' - a topic that is extremely topical in the light of the tariffs introduced by Donald Trump a few days ago and the stated strong protectionist policy of the US, the release reads.

After deliberations and votes, none of the urgent items gathered the necessary support for the Assembly to pass a joint resolution. According to the IPU Statutes, at least 2/3 of the votes of the delegates representing the member countries are needed to pass a resolution on an urgent item.
