The government will compensate farmers for crops damaged by cold weather in recent days. Where a crop is completely ruined, the compensation will be 80% of the input costs, Agriculture and Food Minister Georgi Tahov told a briefing at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

According to Tahov, the measure will target not only fruit and vegetable growers but also grain producers if their crops have been damaged.

In this context, he noted that his ministry is working for the establishment of a mutual aid relief fund to provide additional compensation to farmers. Beginning this year, 1.5% of all direct payments to agricultural producers are set aside for the future fund. A farmer will be entitled to compensation from the mutual aid relief fund if he has a valid insurance policy from an insurance company.
