Nearly One Million Bee Colonies Kept in Bulgaria - Expert

Silistra, Northeastern Bulgaria, April 11 (BTA) - Farming statistics shows that the number of bee colonies in Bulgaria at the end of 2015 was about 750,000 but Dr Ivailo Hristakov of the Rousse University argues that they are at least one million.

Hristakov, who attended a farming seminar in Silistra, said that thanks to the programmes for the development of bee-keeping, the age group of bee-keepers has changed with many young farmers opting for professional bee-keeping.

Hristakov expects a good year for bee-keeping, despite the weather anomalies. He noted the existence of many large-scale hive farms.

The expert also mentioned the Bulgarian contribution in bee selection, the apis mellifera rodopica/apis mellifera macedonica, which is a bee species best adapted to the Bulgarian conditions.
