Former UN Ambassador Tafrov: Kristalina Georgieva Is Acceptable to All Five UN Security Council Permanent Members

Sofia, October 4 (BTA) - Kristalina Georgieva's strength lies in the fact that she is acceptable to all five of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Stefan Tafrov, Bulgaria's former ambassador to the UN, told journalists after Georgieva's hearing on Monday.

Tafrov said that Georgieva has a chance at the top UN post. A country such as Russia has said it would like to see a Eastern European candidate at the helm of the organization and doesn't want to stop neither Georgieva, nor Bokova. "Such a message sends hope but doesn't mean that the Bulgarian candidate will become the UN Secretary General," said Tafrov. According to him, Antonio Guterres is a very strong candidate.

Tafrov said that there are no obstacles to having two Bulgarian ladies in the race.

Georgieva has had a strong beginning to her campaign, but she is in a more unfavourable position than Bokova as she has to conduct her campaign in the course of one or two weeks.

Tafrov took part in a roundtable on "Post Brexit: Bulgaria in a multispeed Europe" in Sofia on Tuesday.
