Eurostat Says Bulgaria Spends Most on Medical Service Suppliers in EU

Sofia, February 15 (BTA) - In 2014, 42.4 per cent of Bulgaria's health care expenditures went for payments to retailers and suppliers of medical supplies - the largest share in EU 28, Eurostat reported.

The other major expenditure item was for hospitals, 34.9 per cent. Another 14.3 per cent were spent to ensure ambulatory medicare, maintenance of the administration and financial security of health services (about 1.7 per cent), as well as 0.5 per cent on preventive care.

Some 3,600 million euro were allocated for health care in Bulgaria in 2014, or about 8.5 per cent of the country's GDP. This ranks Bulgaria last but one in the EU in terms of the money spent on health care per capita: about 500 euro.
