Bulgaria Begins Construction
of New Research Lab
on Antarctica

Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, July 29 (BTA) - This year, Bulgaria begins the construction of a new modern research laboratory at the Bulgarian base on Antarctica, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, head of the National Centre for Polar Studies, told journalists here on Monday. The architectural design competition has already ended, he added.

Prof. Pimpirev was in Plovdiv for Monday's opening of the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP). The four-day conference, which is organized by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the Ministry of Education and Science, is attended by 175 delegates from 36 countries across the globe. Bulgaria has been chosen as a host because of its internationally recognized successes in the exploration of Antarctica.

A competition is about to be launched for the assessment of the projects submitted, Prof. Pimpirev also told journalists. The first such competition was held last year, when seven out of the 25 submitted projects were selected, he specified.

"We are proud of what we have: our polar base and our Arctic programme, because this is the country's face to the world," Prof. Pimpirev said. In his words, during the current polar season new scientific projects will be implemented and science will be made that is competitive to world science and world achievements. "All that we publish there is in English and is for the world, our science on Antarctica is world science," he noted.
