23rd Edition of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2016 Begins in Plovdiv

Plovdiv, April 29 (BTA) - Plovdiv is hosting the most prestigious independent wine competition in the world, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The event started Friday with the participation of a record-high number of Bulgarian wines, around 260 samples. The competition is held for the first time in Bulgaria. A total of 8,750 samples from 51 countries will run in the competition, which will take place in the International Fair from April 29 to May 1, inclusive.

According to the organizers of last year's competition, the Bulgarian samples were 80, as 42 per cent of them won golden and silver medals setting a kind of record in the Bulgarian wine sector.

Participating in the degustation commissions are 320 leading journalists, covering enological issues, sommeliers, wine traders and enologists from 52 countries. Forty per cent of the jury members are Bulgarians including some of the best enologists in the country.

The 23rd edition of this most prestigious independent wine competition in the world in organized by Probegex in cooperation with the Plovdiv, Municipality, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the National Vine and Wine Chamber.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Vassil Groudev said that 130 million litres of wine were produced in Bulgaria in 2015 and over 50 million litres of them were sold abroad. Groudev said that a 20-year record in terms of wine harvesting and processing was registered in 2015.
