International Association of Chiefs of Police Representatives Pay Visit to Bulgaria

Sofia, May 11 (BTA) - The fight against smuggling and corruption was among the highlights of the meeting between Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and representatives of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Cabinet's press service reported Wednesday. IACP First Vice President Don De Lucca and Director of Global Affairs Paul Santiago were introduced to the work of Bulgarian institutions in this field by Borissov during the meeting.

The two IACP representatives are in Sofia as part of a working visit on the occasion of the international conference of the Southeast Europe Police Chiefs Association.

Borissov voiced satisfaction with the fact that Bulgaria's work is appreciated in Europe. He noted the importance of the cooperation with partner services in the fight against organized crime on an international scale, adding that this country will continue to be a reliable and predictable partner. The Prime Minister also highlighted the border protection measures taken by Bulgaria as being indicative of the way this country is meeting its European commitments.

The guests also conferred with Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva, GERB's press service reported. During their meeting, Tsacheva introduced De Lucca and Santiago to the debates surrounding the Electronic Identification Act, which she believes will be adopted by a stable majority.

She also familiarized the two IACP representatives with the series of legislative amendments pertaining to law enforcement in Bulgaria. Tsacheva also said that very soon counterterrorism legislation will be submitted to Parliament for review.

GERB Floor Leader and former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov was presented with an IACP honorary membership certificate, his party's press centre reported.
