DSB Appeals Pro-European Bulgarian Forces to Support Incumbent Plevneliev  as Independent President Candidate

Sofia, May 13 (BTA) - The Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) appealed to the pro-European forces in Bulgaria to support incumbent President Rosen Plevneliev as an independent candidate for president in this autumn's elections and a guarantor for the geo-political priorities in the country, DSB leader Radan Kanev said after a meeting of the party's leadership Friday. He did not specify the appeal but explained it with explaining that he is a constitutional warranty for the country's foreign political orientation, the army's and the protection of judicial power from political intervention. He also added that another reason is the exacerbating geo-political crisis in Bulgaria, threatening the country's geo-political orientation.

According to Kanev, it would be quite natural for GERB to invite the incumbent President to run again for the position, to guarantee him political support and enable him to participate as an independent candidate in the autumn elections.

Former Pleven Mayor Nayden Zelenogorski is a good candidate to mark good participation in elections, but the case is one of victory in a tough geo-political situation, not just marking good participation in elections, Kanev added.

DSB also appealed to all right-centre, reformist parties and civic society structures to unite in the building of a powerful political subject that would guarantee reforms after what his party considers inevitable snap elections, and to isolate the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and any forms of populism from power. The invitation has first been sent to the present coalition partners. GERB has to decide how it will position itself.

DSB appealed yet again their representatives in power to retire and follow the example of Stoil Yakov who did so on Friday.

At the same time, DSB also wants to see an irreversible development of strategic projects, such as the interconnector with Greece, gas surveys in the Black Sea, and the modernization of the army, which they say they will support unconditionally.

President Plevneliev is in his last year of a dynamic mandate, the Head of State Press Secretariat said later in the day. Plevneliev has undertaken to inform Bulgarians whether he will run for a second term in office at the end of June. Until then, any assertion will reflect only the position of its authors, not that of the Head of State. The statement of the leadership of one political party is not his and has not been coordinated with him, the press release says. It adds that Plevneliev has been an unswerving guarantor for Bulgaria's Euro-Atlantic orientation ever since his first day in politics and will remain that way.
