Svetlozar Momchilov, editor-in-chief of US-based newspaper Bulgaria Sega, said that if there was a comprehensive picture of the Bulgarians living in Chicago, "Chicago would not be the fourth largest Bulgarian city, but the first one". Momchilov addressed the participants in the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Odesa on Wednesday via video link.

Having spent 26 years in the US, Momchilov said that they have gathered a lot of information about many successful Bulgarians in Chicago over the past 23 years. "All we know is just the tip of the iceberg. If only we had a fuller picture of who lives where, what their occupation is, what position they hold, what their financial status is, and what contacts they have. Many people consider Chicago to be the fourth city in Bulgaria. But if we had that information, I'm fully convinced that it would have been the first city in Bulgaria in terms of its potential," he said.

"Our mission as a media outlet has always been to have this potential tapped. And every action or inaction on our part has been guided by that mission," he said. According to Momchilov, the media should belong to the people. "And that has always been our goal," he added.

In his words, media outlets should deliver news that is truly relevant to their audience, cover events as objectively as possible, let viewers and readers draw their own conclusions, be free from bias, and be as independent, positive, and constructive as possible. Momchilov noted that the American mainstream media serve as the exact opposite of everything he has listed.

He highlighted BTA’s crucial role, describing its BG World service as one of the biggest achievements that have resulted from the World Meetings of Bulgarian Media.

BTA is organizing the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Odesa, Bolhrad, and Izmail, Ukraine, from June 18 to June 21, 2024. The event is taking place with the support of Aurubis Bulgaria, A1 Bulgaria, Glavbolgarstroy Holding AD, Euroins Insurance Group, Postbank, SOF Connect, and the 13 Centuries of Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
