Bulgarian swimmer Gabriela Georgieva was one hundredth away from reaching the final of the women's 200m backstroke at the 17th World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest. The Bulgarian covered the distance in 2:04.63 minutes and will be the first reserve after Russia's Milana Stepanova finished ahead of her in 2:04.62.

Georgieva also finished 26 hundredths off her own national record set 12 months ago in Romania. She made the top achievement in the qualification series of the 2023 European Championships and finished in the eighth position in the final.

The first time in the qualifiers was set by triple Olympic champion from Paris 2024, Summer McIntosh. The Canadian finished in 2:01.52 minutes.

Petar Mitsin dropped out of the men's 200m freestyle after posting a 24th time. The Bulgarian finished in 1:44.07 and was more than a second behind the qualifying times for Sunday night's final swim in Budapest.
