Commander Nikolay Danailov spoke about the achievements of the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition at a presentation in Varna. The third voyage to Antarctica of Bulgaria's first naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) ended on Friday when the ship arrived in this Black Sea city.
Danailov, who was commanding officer of RSV 421 during the two previous Antarctic expeditions, said continuous training ensures the crew is prepared to work both in the heat of the Equator and in the sub-zero temperatures of Antarctica.
RSV 421 received timely intelligence regarding potential piracy attacks, he said. Mandatory live-fire training exercises against maritime targets were conducted on board, and reports on the drills appeared in local media, implying that the vessel is armed and capable of sailing even in higher-risk areas.
Danailov also spoke about the port calls en route to Antarctica, highlighting the stop in the Argentine city of Mar del Plata, where a twinning agreement was signed between that city and Varna.
Vice President Iliana Iotova and Prof. Christo Pimpirev, President of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, were among the guests at the event in the Star Hall of the Planetarium at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.
