MEPs from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (EP) are organizing an information campaign on rare diseases. The first of a series of discussions in the country on the topic “Rare shades in the palette of life” took place in in Yambol. It was opened by MEPs Kristian Vigenin and Tsvetelina Penkova.

Very often people suffering from rare diseases in Bulgaria do not receive the necessary help, both health and social, said to BTA Kristian Vigenin. Now an intensive campaign has been launched at the European Union (EU) level. The EU intends to invest much more in healthcare, and in the development and distribution of drugs for rare diseases. Our group in the European Parliament has made this a priority. A series of events are also coming up in Brussels, in the Health Committee of the EP, the MEP noted.

“Looking at the data and statistics in our country, it turns out that Bulgarian patients with rare diseases remain deprived of 19 out of 24 priority areas of healthcare, which the EU identifies as a priority”, said MEP Tsvetelina Penkova.

The discussion was attended by social workers, doctors, the deputy mayors of the municipalities of Yambol and Tundzha - Encho Keryazov and Stoyan Petkov, as well as MP Krasimir Yordanov of BSP - United Left for the Yambol constituency.
