Vice President Iliana Iotova said here Friday that the eurozone debate should prioritize public awareness and not politicians' empty words. "The less politicization and political empty talks surrounding the issue of our country’s accession to the Eurozone, the better, energy and efforts should be directed elsewhere," the Vice President said following a presentation on the achievements of the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. She stressed the need for a serious awareness campaign, including active media involvement, to allow experienced individuals to honestly explain both the benefits and potential risks of joining the Eurozone.

Regarding the upcoming convergence report on Bulgaria's progress in meeting the eurozone entry requirements, the Vice President said that there are criteria Bulgaria must meet, and if these are fulfilled, a positive report will follow. She said that the report "has become a mantra" and is being used frequently by politicians. She clarified that it cannot be a pledge for the stability of governments, holding early elections, or reconfiguring the parliamentary majority.

On the issue of votes of no confidence against the Government, Iotova remarked that such votes only make a government even more stable. "The last time, the ruling party received more votes during the vote of no confidence than when the Government was initially formed," she added. Those claiming the votes are part of a campaign against the Eurozone are likely mistaken, as the votes demonstrate an even more stable Government, she added.

She also emphasized the importance of seeking answers to several critical questions. One such question, according to Iotova, is the impact on Bulgarian businesses under different scenarios involving European and US tariffs. She urged Bulgarian ministries to provide answers, particularly regarding the consequences of various outcomes of the war in Ukraine and how Bulgaria will participate in the post-war reconstruction of the country.

On the issue of the agreement with the Turkish gas company BOTAS, Iotova expressed her desire to hear the realistic opinions of the responsible ministers on what should be done with the agreement. She recalled that the agreement was signed during a particularly difficult and uncertain period, and at that time, it ensured the security of supplies not only for Bulgaria but for Europe as a whole. "I don't believe that, especially in the current international situation, there is anything that cannot be renegotiated. It depends on the professionalism of those responsible for making decisions," Iotova concluded.
