The Ministry of Youth and Sport strongly condemns any form of vandalism, violence and aggression that occurred on Thursday in the very centre of Sofia. The ministry also opposes the overstepping of rights delegated to representatives of the law enforcement agencies, whose main mission is to protect the security of citizens and the respect of democratic rights, reads a Ministry of Youth and Sports position on the events in the centre of Sofia during the fans' protests against the leadership of the Bulgarian Football Union before and during the European qualifier between the national teams of Bulgaria and Hungary on Thursday.
The right to peaceful protest is a supreme value of democratic societies. But when the boundaries of civilised protest give way to violence, we enter the field of anti-social behaviour. And these do not correspond to the basic functions of sport, which unites all the nations of the world under the motto of peace and understanding, the ministry says.
