For European policies to align with Bulgarian agriculture, Bulgaria needs to actively participate in their development, MP Atidzhe Alieva-Veli, a member of the parliamentary committee on agriculture, forests, and food, told BTA's Presiana Valkanova on Thursday.
Alieva-Veli was a guest panellist at the agricultural forum The Farm, part of the International Agricultural Exhibition AGRA 2025 at the International Fair Plovdiv.
“These meetings are crucial for understanding the views of the agricultural sector. In the past two weeks, there has been significant movement at the European level regarding agriculture, particularly with the European Commission’s presentation of the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework beyond 2027. It is essential that Bulgaria’s agricultural sector is heard in these strategic EU documents, as public consultations will take place in the coming weeks and months,” Alieva-Veli said.
She also addressed the issue of rising food prices in Bulgaria. "We need to strengthen the entire supply chain, particularly by improving the position of farmers. Currently, only about 15% of the profits generated along the food chain remain with farmers, creating a major imbalance," she noted.
Alieva-Veli said several measures are needed: fostering cooperation among producers to improve market positions, addressing long-standing irrigation issues to boost competitiveness, and implementing a set of long-term strategies to strengthen the sector.
